Gum disease is an enormous problem in the United States and is particularly widespread among older Americans. Quite often, it is caused in part by structural problems with the gingiva or gums due to genetic abnormalities and/or recession.

Gum recession can occur from severe and/or repeated gum infections, leading the gums to pull back from the teeth and bone and leaving open pockets that act as havens for harmful bacteria. The affected areas will not heal on their own, and surgery is necessary to repair the issue.
